Rowac

Rowac was founded in 1888 in Zschopauer Straße in Chemnitz. In 1920, the factory site in Altchemnitz (Annaberger Straße) was moved, which still houses the successor company bemefa GmbH. In addition, Rowac produced various chairs, cabinets, tables and various (storage) boxes and containers

In the online archives of the German Patent and Trademark Office a number of company patents are searchable (mostly from the 1920s), concerning the details of various stools and chairs, but other things like bottle crates, spools boxes and window locks . In 1931 the company was mentioned as an example in specialist literature on hygiene at the office workplace.

The design corresponds to the functionalist ideal, which was represented in the interwar period in Germany, among others, by the Bauhaus and therefore practicality and practicality should be at the center of the aesthetic interest. The design of the Rowac stool is reduced and factual, because it was designed for factory use, not for an aesthetically attentive audience….. Source

Bauhaus

Founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar, Germany, in 1919, the Bauhaus school was located in Dessau from 1925 to 1932. On the run from the Nazis, the school was moved to Berlin in 1932, before closing down in 1933. Many of the artists, designers and architects moved to the United States and taught at Harvard, MIT, Black Mountain College and even Pond Farm. Almost a century later, the Bauhaus influence on art, design and architecture is still powerful. Marcel Breuer, Josef Albers, Herbert Bayer, Franz Ehrlich, Marianne Brandt, and Anni Albers represent just a short list of designers and artists who were part of Bauhaus.
