Betty Feves Sculpture

Betty Feves ceramic sculpture. Monumental scale, amazing form and striking abstract glaze decoration. This is a major piece by a true icon in the ceramics world. Signed Feves in the clay. There are also two paper labels.

Betty Feves (1918-1985) was an Oregon artist who helped shape the development of clay as an expressive medium. After studying art under Clyfford Still at Washington State College in the late ’30s, she spent time in New York studying at the Art Students League. She then returned to Pendleton, Oregon. Her pottery and sculptural work were inspired by the land in both material and form. Her clay was locally sourced and she created her own glaze formulas.

In 2012, the Museum of Contemporary Craft held Generations: Betty Feves, the first museum retrospective exhibition and publication on the artist’s work and life.
