Malcolm Leland (1922–2019 ) worked across ceramics, sculpture, and architecture. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he served as a B-17 pilot during World War II before founding Malcolm Leland Ceramics in El Segundo, California. This piece was produced as part of a series of designs in the early 1950s while working in El Segundo.

In addition to his own production, Leland designed for N.S. Gustin Co. and Architectural Pottery. He earned a 1955 MoMA Good Design Award for a bird shelter design Architectural Pottery produced.

Leland later transitioned into architectural design, creating sculptures, facades and structural elements for major Southern California buildings, including the American Cement Company Building, L.A. Hall of Records and projects for institutions like UCLA, USC, San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Civic Center.
