Robert Arneson was an American sculptor and ceramic artist widely regarded as the father of Funk Art—an anti-establishment movement known for blending found materials, autobiographical themes, and irreverent humor. Born on September 4, 1930, in Benicia, California, he attended the California College of the Arts after beginning his career as a cartoonist for a local newspaper. In 1962, he joined UC Davis as a professor of ceramics, where he spent nearly thirty years building the ceramic sculpture program and elevating the medium’s status within the fine art world. His work is held in major museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
